Beast of Reincarnation Cleanse Walker — Why Swords Cap Out

Updated August 12, 2026 · Facts cross-checked against the sources listed below

If the workbench refuses an upgrade with “You lack the capability to perform this action”, you are not short of Amber and Emma’s level is irrelevant. Bauera — the Cleanse Walker’s programming — has three separate levels, and one of them is too low. For a sword the blocker is almost always Power, and Power is raised by Generator Devices (blue skulls) not by memory chips, which only feed the ranged line. Several major guides say “farm memory chips” here, and for a capped sword that advice does nothing.

The Table Every Other Guide Splits in Three

This is the whole system, and the reason it is confusing: the three materials look alike — they are all skull-shaped salvage — but they are separate items feeding separate levels. Most sites publish a location page for each one without saying which upgrade it unlocks, so you can read three guides and still not know what to go and find.

Bauera levelSkull colourMaterialWhat it unlocks
PowerBlueGenerator DeviceHigher sword tiers — more melee damage, and a stronger version of each sword’s unique passive. Also expands the Grow Chamber and the Incubator.
KnowledgeGreenMemory ChipEverything ranged: bow, crossbow, arrows and bolts. Ranged damage, crossbow reload speed, bow draw time, and how many projectiles fit in your quiver.
CalculationsYellowElectronic BrainSpirit Stone duplication at the workbench, and more research options for Kagura — higher-tier cooking and crop growing.

The colour coding is the fastest way to remember it, and it is confirmed from two directions: the upgrade screen labels the three abilities blue, yellow and green, and the salvage items are described by colour in the same order.

Why “Farm Memory Chips” Is the Wrong Advice

This is the single most useful thing on this page. Search for the error message and the answer you get back, repeatedly, is some version of “collect all the memory chips you can find” — one major outlet even writes it as “hunt for Power memory chips”, which is not a thing the game contains.

Memory Chips raise Knowledge. Knowledge gates the ranged line only. If your sword is the thing refusing to upgrade, memory chips will not move that number no matter how many you collect — you need Generator Devices. The advice is not quite wrong so much as under-specified, but the practical result is players spending hours on the wrong pickup.

The check takes a second: open the weapon’s upgrade entry and read which ability it names, then go and find that colour.

Power 5 Is the Number That Matters

Of the three, Power is the one that actually bites, because it is the one standing between you and a finished weapon. Reaching the maximum sword tier requires Power at level 5 or higher. Two independent guides describe Power as the usual limiter on weapon enhancement, especially for melee.

Practical consequence for anyone saving up: salvage every golem and every mechanical wreck you walk past, even when you are not short of Amber. Amber and Bauera levels are two different currencies and only one of them can be farmed on demand. Full costs are on the Amber farming page, and the upgrade lines themselves are covered under weapons.

One thing worth not hoarding for: surplus salvage turns into Amber automatically once a level is satisfied. There is no penalty for spending, and no benefit to sitting on a stack.

Where the Salvage Comes From

  • Strongboxes — frequently marked on your map by Koo. The strongbox page covers opening them.
  • Rusted golems and mechanical ruins of the old world — the densest source, and the reason exploring off-route pays.
  • Enemy and golem drops as you fight through a zone.
  • Marked as Valuables on the overworld map, with the three types often sitting near each other.

What Nobody Has Published

Being direct about the gaps, because several sites fill them with confident-sounding numbers that have no source behind them:

  • The level requirement for every individual weapon tier. Only the headline figure — Power 5 for a maxed sword — is documented. What Power 2, 3 or 4 unlock, and whether different swords ask for different levels, has not been published by anyone.
  • How much salvage each level costs. One guide states 30 of a material per ability to reach a cap of level 7 single source. No second source repeats either figure, and no source at all gives the per-level breakdown.
  • How many of each item exist in the world. Location pages exist, but no total is agreed across them.
  • Whether Facility Modules and Generator Devices overlap. Both are credited with expanding the Grow Chamber and Incubator by different sources. Nobody has stated the division cleanly.

If you see a page giving exact per-level costs, ask where the number came from — we could not find one, and we would rather say so than invent a table.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does "You lack the capability to perform this action" mean?

It means the Cleanse Walker’s programming, Bauera, has not reached the level that upgrade requires. It is never about Amber and never about Emma’s own level. The weapon’s upgrade screen marks which Bauera level it needs; raise that one and the option unlocks.

Why won’t my sword upgrade even though I have plenty of Amber?

Because sword tiers are gated behind Bauera’s Power level, and Power is raised only by Generator Devices — the blue skull-shaped salvage. Reaching the maximum sword tier needs Power at level 5 or above. No amount of Amber, and no amount of levelling Emma, substitutes for it.

What is the difference between Memory Chips, Electronic Brains and Generator Devices?

They are three distinct items that feed three different Bauera levels. Green Memory Chips raise Knowledge, which gates bows, crossbows, arrows and bolts. Blue Generator Devices raise Power, which gates swords. Yellow Electronic Brains raise Calculations, which gates Spirit Stone duplication and Kagura’s higher-tier research. Some guides use "memory chip" loosely for all three, which is how players end up farming the wrong item.

How do I level up Bauera?

You do not spend anything. Pick the salvage up while exploring — strongboxes, rusted golems, mechanical ruins and enemy drops — and it is consumed automatically when you return to the Cleanse Walker, raising the matching level. Surplus beyond what a level needs converts into Amber on its own, so there is no reason to hoard.

Are Facility Modules a fourth Bauera level?

No. Facility Modules upgrade the walker’s facilities directly — the Grow Chamber and Incubator capacity — rather than raising Power, Knowledge or Calculations. Worth noting that sources disagree slightly here: the same expansion is credited to Generator Devices in one place and to Facility Modules in another, and nobody has published which does what precisely.

What is the maximum Bauera level?

One guide states each of the three abilities caps at level 7 and needs 30 of the matching material to get there, but no second source confirms either number, so treat it as reported rather than established. What is agreed across sources is that the supply in the world is generous and the top tiers are a mid-to-late-game milestone.
